Accessible taxis and Private Hire Vehicles (PHV) can provide assistance and door-to-door services, making them a great transport solution for blind and partially sighted people. This is particularly true for those blind and partially sighted people who may face barriers when accessing public transport.
Despite the benefits that taxi and PHVs can offer blind and partially sighted people, there are significant issues.
- Relatively high cost compared to public transport
- Refusal to accommodate guide dogs
- Lack of understanding and awareness amongst taxi drivers
Bristol Sight Loss Council has worked with Bristol City Council and Avon and Somerset police to produce a visual impairment awareness video for taxi drivers. The video provides practical tips on how taxi drivers can support blind or partially sighted passengers.
In March, the Department for Transport opened a consultation on best practice guidance for taxi and private hire vehicles.
