It’s estimated that there are over 22,000 blind and partially sighted people of working age in employment in the UK. (source: My Voice 2015)
Despite blind and partially sighted people excelling in a wide range of careers, we are still underrepresented in the workplace and face a number of barriers into employment. Sight Loss Councils are dedicated to raising awareness of the challenges and helping more blind and partially sighted people into work. We will continue to:
- Work with employers, job centres and recruitment specialists
- Reach out to higher and further education facilities to ensure better transition into the workplace.
Successes in employment
In February 2020, our Merseyside Sight Loss Council held an employment event at Anfield Stadium, that brought together employers and blind and partially sighted job seekers. ‘Bridge the gap’ centred on the wealth of talent and expertise that visually impaired employees offer and provided advice on the practical, financial and technical support available to employers.
