About the event

Essex Sight Loss Council (SLC) is excited to welcome you to explore how you can access arts and culture.

We will be joined by Dr Mark Curteis, Assistant Museums Manager, Curatorial and Learning, at Chelmsford Museum, and Jessica Beal, Audience Development and Marketing Manager at VocalEyes. They will discuss the work they are doing to ensure blind and partially sighted (BPS) people can access museums, galleries, and theatres across the county.

There will be presentations from Essex SLC and our guest speakers, followed by a question-and-answer session, and group workshops. There will also be the opportunity to participate in an interactive audio-description experience.

Samantha Leftwich, Engagement Manager for East England, said:

“We’d love you to join us at our event where we will hear from some of our partners working in the arts industry.
“Essex Sight Loss Council is working across the county to make arts and culture more accessible to blind and partially sighted people. At our event, we will discuss our work to date, share our future plans, and hear your thoughts and ideas about how it can be made more accessible.

“All whilst enjoying a cup of tea and some cake!”

Lee Mercer, Essex SLC member, added:

“This event will be a fantastic opportunity to engage with the businesses, venues and organisations in the arts and culture sector. It offers a chance to build relationships and make future events more accessible and enjoyable for the VI community.

“I’m really looking forward to finding out what plans are coming together so that I can enjoy shows, exhibitions and future events. The more people that know about accessible projects and technologies, the more we can enjoy being part of the wider community with fewer barriers in the way.”
