Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council launched in March 2020. Since then, the council has brought together blind and partially sighted volunteers from across the region. Together they advocate for the needs of visually impaired people in the area.
We meet once a month to discuss any accessibility issues raised by the community. We plan our projects under our three key priority areas of Employment and Skills, Health and Well-being and Inclusive Communities
“Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council is excited to continue its work within the local area. Over recent years, we have established a healthy relationship with local sight loss organisations who we have partnered with to deliver a range of events and training sessions to external stakeholders.
“Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council has always had a passion for both retail and arts and culture based projects. We have worked closely with Manchester Arndale for many years, ensuring retailers understand the challenges blind and partially sighted people face when accessing the retail industry.
“Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council has continued to celebrate Manchester’s rich culture by working closely with the National Trust to improve the accessibility of differing historical sites in the city including Ordsal Hall and Castlefield Viaduct.
“This fantastic work would not have been achieved if it wasn’t for our excellent volunteers who are the driving force behind everything we do.”
Kelly Barton, Engagement Manager (North West)
Why should I volunteer?
Please note that we are not currently taking applications for Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council.
If you want to make a real difference in your local area on the issues that affect blind and partially sighted people, joining our Sight loss Council could be the perfect volunteering opportunity for you.
You will work with policy makers and local service providers to improve access for blind and partially sighted people in your local community. It is also a great opportunity to come together with other blind and partially sighted people in your area.
“I joined the Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council to meet new blind and partially sighted people and do something meaningful. I enjoy the varied events we engage with.
“My favourite project is focussed around accessible transport. To develop this work, we have worked closely with the Bee Network, alongside other tech companies, to trial navigation apps and feed back on their accessibility. This is something I have enjoyed, as these apps mean I can travel independently around my local area.”
