Northumberland and Tyne and Wear Sight Loss Councils invite blind and partially sighted (BPS) people to attend their ‘Let’s Get Active’ day in the North East.

This is a free multi-sport event taking place on Thursday, 31 October 2024 from 10am-3pm at Newcastle Sports Central, Northumbria university.

No previous experience required.

About the event

This event aims to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to participate in sport and become more active. Small changes in how venues deliver sports and leisure sessions and adapt their premises can greatly improve participation and accessibility.

As part of the ‘Let’s Get Active’ day, there will be a variety of group sports, including cricket, goalball, baseball, and tennis. Or if you’d like to take your enjoyment of adaptive sports to new heights, why not try the climbing wall?

It will be a great opportunity for people with sight loss to try out a range of adapted sports and activities.

Darren Cook, Tyne and Wear SLC member, said:

“I have participated in various VI sports throughout my life, including playing for England at the blind football world cup. Engaging with sport and fitness as a visually impaired person is very important to me, as it gives me the chance to exercise my competitive nature, socialise with friends and keep fit in the process.

“Attending weekly sport clubs is great for my wellbeing too. Sport has always been a huge passion of mine, and I hope others are able to derive the same amount of joy from it as I do.”

Jack Moffat, Engagement Manager for the North East, added:

Whether you’re looking to try a sport, explore something new, or see what’s available in the region, this event is for you.

“The north east loves sport, and we want to boost inclusivity, encouraging blind and partially sighted people to stay active. Small changes in how activities are delivered can make a big difference in accessibility and wellbeing.”
