Northumberland SLC Project Specific Volunteer: Eye Health project (Age UK)

Northumberland SLC Project Specific Volunteer: Eye Health project in partnership with Age UK

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for blind or partially sighted people living in Northumberland to volunteer for Thomas Pocklington Trust and support our work with Northumberland Age UK.

Where is the role based?

The role is home-based, and you will be expected to attend some meetings face to face or online (Microsoft Teams or Zoom).

What is the purpose of the project?

4 out 5 people with sight loss are over 60 years of age (RNIB) and half of sight-loss is avoidable (Fight for Sight).

Age UK Northumberland Age UK had contact with over five thousand people (2020). This presents a significant opportunity to help those most at risk of sight loss.

As a volunteer on this project, you will play a key role in promoting understanding and increasing awareness around the importance of eye health.  You will encourage people to seek help if they notice a change with their vision.

What would you be doing?

You will be supporting the Northeast Engagement manager to volunteer alongside Age UK staff.  You will attend awareness sessions in which you will provide information on general eye health; you will also provide people with information about what local support available.

You will be invited to attend bi-monthly SLC meetings to update on the progress of the project.

What equipment and support will I need?

We will provide you with the appropriate training for this role through our online learning training package.  We will provide you with your very own SLC email address.

We anticipate that you will be a proficient user of technology, with easy access and use of a PC, laptop or tablet device and a reliable internet connection.

Support available:

The Northeast Engagement Manager will oversee all aspects of the project and provide regular catch-up sessions with you, as well developing a plan that will contain milestones.

Expenses incurred will be re-imbursed, in accordance with our Volunteer Expense Policy.
