Multi-sport taster event for blind and partially sighted people across Yorkshire and Humberside
Care to dance? Are you a blind or partially sighted (BPS) and interested in trying ballroom dancing, cricket, tennis, yoga, or climbing? Do you know someone who does? BPS people living in Yorkshire and Humberside are invited to try out new sports at a ‘Let’s Get Active’ multi-sport taster event for BPS people across the region.
The event created by West, South and North Yorkshire Sight Loss Councils (SLCs) will be held on 12 July 2025 from 10am until 4pm at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.
The multi-sport taster day aims to ensure that everyone in the region has an equal opportunity to participate in sport and become more active. Consequently, it will also demonstrate how small changes in the way sports and leisure sessions are delivered can impact on their inclusivity.
About the multi-sport taster event

Experienced and qualified BPS sports coaches and leaders will be on hand throughout the event to deliver a range of activities through sports that include karate, visually impaired (VI) cricket, a climbing wall, tennis and ballroom dancing.
South Yorkshire SLC member Lee will be delivering a ballroom dancing workshop. He shared the positive impact dancing has had on him during his sight loss journey. He explained:
“I recently lost my sight and found transitioning from being an active and healthy man and chef, to having to learn new skills and ways of managing, to be a real challenge. For me, part of this transformation was realising what I could do, rather than what I couldn’t do. I wanted to ensure I could still be independent, regain my confidence and remain active.
“Then, I discovered dance, and wow. It has given me such joy and a sense of accomplishment. This year we are bringing dance to Let’s Get Active in Sheffield. I would love to show you just how enjoyable it is, as you share learning a new skill. Who knows, we could all give Chris McCausland a run for his money.”

A delegate tried the climbing wall at a previous Let’s Get Active event for BPS people. This activity will be available on the day.
South Yorkshire SLC member Bilaal shared how taking up sports has been fundamental to improving his wellbeing. He said:
“Getting involved in sports has really improved my mental and physical health – I get to try new things and make friends at the same time. I think everyone should give a new sport, or activity, a go and they might even discover a new passion!”
Anyone from the Yorkshire and Humberside area who is blind or partially sighted is welcome to attend this event. However, please note that children must always be accompanied by parents or guardians.
